Fourteen: Fear of the Dark

Dear Diary

Ben is such a smart boy and his teachers all talk highly of him.  He seems to genuinely enjoy school and he asks for help with his homework nearly every night.

He has such a good imagination, full of invisible friends no one but he can see.  More disturbingly he has begun complaining about seeing a monster under the bed.  I figure this is normal childhood fear of the dark and perhaps reluctance to stay in his own room combined with that wonderful imagination.  Poor Ben does seem distressed though.

Alex and I tried encouraging Ben to talk to the monster, thinking he could work through his fear and be stronger for having done it himself.  Well, that didn't really work.  Seems the monster didn't want to 'talk' to Ben.  -sigh-
Then we tried 'monster repellent' which was really just water in an old bottle of cleaner with a spray top.  In the end we had to get him a night light.

 Jonah and Adeline broke up.  Apparently they went to some live comedy act and by the end of the night Adeline was accusing him of paying far too much attention to the young female bartender and not enough to her!  Jonah decided he'd had enough and let her stalk off.
They talked it over at work later that week.  Adeline admitted that their relationship hadn't been going anywhere from the beginning.  She had been hurt in the past and still held a lot of resentment along with fighting to try and get a more equal status and conditions with the male doctors.  She apologised and told Jonah that she knew he was a 'good man'.  They decided to keep things friendly and professional.  I'm just glad Jonah knew he had someone he could talk to when he unloaded over tea the other night.

Alex and I have decided we want another baby.  We had a long talk about how we never really intended to have just one and how Alex grew up an only child.  It will be good for Ben to have a brother or sister.  I do worry about how he'll take it though.  Anyway, I'll come off the pill and Alex and I will start 'trying' and we'll see where we go from there.
